SPEAKERS’ ACADEMY/CELL

Speakers’ Academy is a forum where every student gets to voice their opinions on various topics. It is one of the premium clubs in Podar college giving students the chance to hone their debating skills.
We at Speakers Academy, train the brightest minds of the city (our students) in Public Speaking, which is nowadays a prerequisite to take up bigger responsibilities and succeed at different levels. We build the confidence, the self-esteem and the fluency of speaking to an audience and also help in grooming the student in all aspects to compete at any given level.

Annual Report 2016-17

The Academy held its annual orientation program on 28th July 2016 with Mr. Yatin Mohane, an IIM Bangalore alumnus, as the chief guest, which witnessed the participation of enthusiastic students, teachers in charge along with the presence our Vice Principal Mrs. Kavita Jajoo and Principal Dr. Shobana Vasudevan. The main purpose of this programme was to teach the students the ways in which they can enhance their soft skills. To introduce the Speaker’s Academy as well as the Group Discussion Cell, a mock debate, group discussions and elocution sessions were also held. In November 2016, after a series of elimination rounds, 6 candidates were shortlisted for the final event of the A. D. Shroff Elocution Competition. Students spoke on the following topics:

Make in India - As I see it.

Water Management.

Road Development of urban-rural connectivity.

The much-awaited Bullfight was conducted across the academic year and this time, to bring in more participants, the Academy promoted the event on social media platforms. Best two students got an opportunity to participate in Rostrum Spectrum, an inter-collegiate event.

Event - Opening Ceremony
Date – 8th August 2015
The year started with the traditional orientation held along with the GDC which charted the path for the year to come and made the same clear to new students.
We were joined by Mr. Pranav Advani and Ms. Divya Venkataraman for guiding the current students about the importance of publice speaking.
The main purpose of this programme was to teach the students how they can enhance their soft skills and it turned out to be a huge success with a full-packed class and an enthusiastic audience. A mock Debate, Group discussion, Elocution were held to introduce Speakers’ Academy & Group Discussion Cell.

Event - Bullfight Debate
Date – September to November
“Don’t raise your voice, raise your argument” – Edmond Tutu.
We started the much awaited bullfight which saw enthusiastic participants and were conducted across three months, that is, August to September.
Old participants and new both got a chance to hone their debating skills in this annual fixture.
Being the 75th year, we raised the bar of Speakers’ Academy by introducing the Bullfights to the junior college. We saw tremendous participation throughout the Junior college, heard amazing speeches, heated argument and most of all, mind numbing talent.
In January, were conducted the finals of the Bullfights. The winners were:

Event - Teacher’s Day Elocution
Date – 5th September 2015
September saw the annual Teacher's Day elocution where students gave an ode to their teachers.
Teachers’ Day Elocution was judged by our very own professor, Ms. Amita Pathak. After many warm and well delivered speeches, the final positions were:
1st Place – Ms. Sasha Pullikan
2nd Place – Mr. Mihir Jain
3rd Place – Mr. Utsav Sejpal

Event - A. D. Shroff Elocution
Date – 21st November
A. D. Shroff Elocution Competition is organized by Forum of Free Enterprise. It is one of the most prestigious elocution competition held in Mumbai.
We were honored to have had the opportunity to host Mr. Sunil to judge the event.
In November, the first round of the prestigious A. D. Shroff Elocution (conducted by the Forum of Free Enterprise) was conducted. We saw participation in large numbers and after well oriented deliveries; the elocution was won by Ms. Ritika Gupta.

Event - Sundaresan Memorial Elocution
Date – 29th November
Sundaresan Memorial Elocution competition is one of the prestigious competitions held by the college. Every year, Mr. Somashekhar Sundaresan enlightens us with wide spectrum of topics to argue. This year, we were graced with not only Mr. Somashekhar but also Mr. Vidhyashekar Sundaresan. The Sundaresan Memorial was organized in November. It saw enthusiastic participation from the students. The final positions were:

Event - Rostrum Spectrum
Date – 16th January 2016
Rostrum Spectrum is inter-collegiate literary extravaganza hosted by our college. Started in 1991, Rostrum Spectrum has an illustrious journey and this, being the 25th year since the inception, it was nothing but celebration. We saw participation from various colleges. Also, we were honored to host Mr. Sahuraja, who has always been a constant support to our initiative of Rostrum Spectrum.
The eliminations was judged by Mr. Siddhesh Chaubal & Prof. Asmita Gupta and the finals were judged by Mr. Anuj Daftery & Ms. Duhita.
After rounds of passionate speeches & heated discussions, Mr. Ram Keshwala and Mr. were declared winners of the Rostrum trophy while Mr. Zoheb Khan was declared the winner of the Spectrum trophy. Mr. Srinath was adjudged as the best speakers of the event.

Activities conducted during the year 2014-15:-

Orientation cum Workshop programme:
One of the oldest forums of RA Podar College of Commerce and Economics, started off with an Orientation cum Workshop programme for its students. The main purpose of this programme was to teach the students how they can enhance their soft skills and it turned out to be a huge success with a full-packed class and an enthusiastic audience. A mock Debate, Group – Discussion, Elocution and Turncoat Debate were held to introduce the Speakers Academy and Group Discussion Cell activities to the audience.


Intra – Collegiate Debates:
The second and most important activity of the Speakers Academy routine were the Intra – collegiate debates which were held through the course of the academic year. This year saw many first – time debaters battle it out in the eliminations round all the way up to the final Bull – Fight round. Thus our second activity was greeted by an overwhelming 132 registrations from fellow Podarites who wanted to start enhancing their soft skills. In the end the best speakers of Podar College – Mr Shyam Datye, Mr. Utsav Sejpal, Mr. Aditya Rathod and Mr. Silvester Joshua were awarded.


Teachers Day Elocution:
The third activity of the year organised by Speakers Academy was the Teachers Day Elocution. With contemporary topics on the most respected profession, the students did not fail to surprise the judges with their ideas. Ms. Shagun Sharma won, and Ms. Ritika Gupta finished a close second!


AD. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition:
The fourth activity organized by Speakers Academy for the year was the annual A. D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition. This competition is held to select one best speaker to represent Podar College in the next inter-collegiate level of A.D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition. With some of the best speakers of our college battling it out for one coveted and prestigious prize, the judges and audience were left spell bound after every performance. Mr. Shyam Datye who emerged as the winner and went on to represent Podar at the zonal level and won the 50 the A.D. Shroff memorial elocution contest at the Inter–collegiate round.


Rostrum Spectrum:
‘Rostrum Spectrum’ – a literary inter – collegiate festival this year was co-organized by Speakers Academy and Group Discussion Cell. Rostrum Spectrum hosts two flagship events Debates and Group Discussions. It was indeed a huge success with the participants enjoying every event right from the start to the finish.


Other Achievements:
Speakers Academy is proud to state that Podarites have not just excelled in the intra – collegiate activities but have also excelled in the inter-collegiate activities. Jeetendra Khilnani and Shyam Datye won the Gold Medal at the Youth Festival Debate. Shyam Datye went on to the final eight of the A. D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition and shall battle for the first place on January 26th, 2015.

The journey of Speakers Academy through the 2014-2015 academic year saw many brilliant speakers battle it out amongst themselves and many budding speakers recognize and hone their public – speaking skills.

Plan Action(2014-15):
The Speakers Academy plans to conduct a workshop cum orientation along with the Group Discussion Cell in Public Speaking.

The Speaker Academy plans to conduct its Annual Intra Collegiate Debate Competition in the months of July, August and September. This event would be followed by annual elocution competitions namely – A D Shroff Memorial and the Sunderasan Memorial Competition.

Our Inter Collegiate literary festival – Rostrum Spectrum would take place in January comprising of colleges across Mumbai.

This year we also plan to collaborate with Engima- The Quest in hosting ‘ Who’s the Anchor?’ which would be judged by Mr.Vir Das.

With 12 colleges participating, it was a great competition with the quality of speakers being at its peak.

Speakers Academy is proud to state that Podarites have not just excelled in the intra – collegiate activities but have also excelled in the inter-collegiate activities. Jeetendra Khilnani and Nithin Shetty were declared runners up of the Youth Festival Debate. Vaibhav Doshi was declared winner of the intercollegiate elocution competition held at Vivek College. Jeetendra Khilnani was awarded Best Indian Speaker at the 21st International Economics Convention. Varsha Srinivasan went on win the A. D. Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition.

The journey of Speakers Academy through the 2013-2014 academic year saw many brilliant speakers battle it out amongst themselves and many budding speakers recognize and hone their public – speaking skills.
